This iconic magnetic stripe card used for fare payment on transportation in NYC was launched in 1992 and replaced the subway token. What’s wild is that the Metrocard will be replaced by OMNY, a contactless fare payment system so like the token, pretty soon we’ll only have a needlepoint version to remember it by!
